What Does Guardian Mean?

A guardian is a person responsible for the care of another person who is incapable of looking out for themselves, often a child. Guardians manage the affairs of those under their care, including their finances and healthcare decisions.

Insuranceopedia Explains Guardian

Parents are automatically their children's guardians unless they are legally declared unfit to care for them. If a person's legal guardians die, abandon them, or otherwise cease being able to care for them, the law may grant guardianship to another competent adult.

If the parents die without a will dictating their wishes for their children, the court appoints a person to care for the ward.
