What Does Pre-Admission Authorization Mean?

Pre-admission authorization is a document given by the insurance company to a health insurance policyholder that allows him or her to be admitted to the hospital. Prior to this, the hospital gives a document to the insured that he or she is eligible for the hospital stay.

Insuranceopedia Explains Pre-Admission Authorization

After an examination, a doctor can decide that a patient needs to be admitted to a hospital. The patient then goes through pre-admission. The process involves booking himself or herself into a hospital room or ward. One of the documents needed for this is the pre-admission authorization from the insurer. Before issuing the pre-admission authorization, the insurer inspects the procedures and treatment involved in the hospital stay to be sure that they are covered by the patient's policy.
