How To Buy Pet Insurance Online In Colorado

If you would rather research and buy pet insurance without leaving the privacy and comfort of your home or office, you’ll be happy to hear that thanks to the World Wide Web, this is a fast and easy task. Platforms such as Insuranceopedia are treasure troves of useful information about pet insurance. There are things you can do ahead of time, too, even submitting an application for coverage, that will streamline the process.

Below are four important steps you’ll want to take during the pet insurance buying process:

  • Step 1: Gather together all of the relevant information before embarking on your research into pet insurance companies. For example: the pet type, (i.e. cat or dog) the breed of pet, the age of pet, the medical history of the pet, and all other documentation pertaining to your pet’s lineage, if any
  • Step 2: Run the figures to calculate about how much coverage as well as deductible amounts are best for you and your pet
  • Step 3: Compare quotes from a minimum of 3 pet insurance companies
  • Step 4: Narrow these 3 choices by eliminating two. Then submit an application, purchase a policy, and contact your vet to let him/her know about the new pet insurance policy

Things That Have An Impact On The Cost Of A Pet Insurance Policy In Colorado

Some pet owners are under the impression that pet insurance premiums are based on one or two factors. Actually, there are various factors involved in rates for pet coverage. These price components include:

  • Breed
  • Animal Type
  • Age
  • Insurance Type
  • Location

Animal Type

When you’ve done your due diligence with research and shopped around checking out pet insurance carriers, it’s time to make a purchase. Please note that the type of pet you own will play a pivotal role in the cost of monthly premiums. The average dog owner will pay two to three times more than cat owners, mainly because dogs tend to spend more time outdoors where they are at higher risk for accident and sickness.

Breed

The breed of pet is also an important point in pet health insurance cost. There might not be a huge difference in premiums for many dog breeds, but some breeds are considered high risk

For example, bulldogs and boxers have a history of sinus problems and skin issues. Therefore, these breeds with a higher likelihood of developing health problems will usually  incur a higher cost to insure.

Age

Your pet’s age is a factor in the quotes you get from various pet insurance carriers, too. Some pet insurance companies keep their premiums affordable no matter the age of your pet, while there are others that won’t approve the application for coverage if your pet is–by their criteria- too old. So, if you’re a senior pet owner, you should definitely take time to check around for the best pet insurance for older pets.

Insurance Type

Generally speaking, you’ll have 2 options when you buy a pet insurance policy: Accident-only, or both accident and illness coverage. Both of these policies furnish protection for your pet as well as your pocketbook when your pet needs medical care. A comprehensive policy that covers both accident and illnesses will cost more than accident only. If you can’t decide between the two, it might help to ask yourself if the price of the additional coverage will be worth it in the long run.

Location

There’s no huge difference in the cost of pet insurance from city to city, but certain areas within a state may well be deemed high risk because of more claims coming from that area. In that event, if you live in one of those areas, your pet insurance will probably cost more.

How To Find The Best Pet Insurance Company For You

Choosing pet insurance is similar to purchasing health or life insurance for yourself. You must compare rates, naturally. But before you get to that point in your research, be sure you know what features are most critical in pet insurance coverage.

Most pet insurance carriers offer pet insurance coverage that covers just accidents, no illnesses. Many pet insurance companies have on offer accident and forgiveness plans. Both plans have benefits and either one may be the most suitable for your and your pet’s needs.

Young pets, for example, are not likely to develop age-related illnesses exhibited in older pets. In that case, the accident-only coverage would probably be best for this group. If your pet is a breed known to be at high risk for certain health conditions, it might derive more benefit from a comprehensive plan as opposed to accident-only.

One point you might keep in mind is the duration of the waiting period before insurance benefits will begin to pay. Pet insurance companies can have various lengths of waiting periods for illnesses and/or accidents. It’s better to know this up front, so do some research before purchasing a policy in order to determine which policy is best for your pet.

Pet Insurance Discounts In Colorado

Just as other types of insurance coverage, pet insurance can cost more depending on your location. One way to lessen the price of premiums is to utilize discounts a pet insurance company might have available. Pet insurance carriers don’t all provide the same identical discounts, so it pays to shop around and do comparisons between insurers to see what discounts each one offers. It might be worth your while to check out the options shown below:

  • Wholesale and special interest clubs discounts
  • Special service animal discounts
  • Active and retired military discounts
  • Employer sponsored discounts
  • Multi-pet discount
  • Animal care employee discounts
  • Employee union discounts
  • Multi-policy discount
  • Senior discounts
  • Online policy discounts

Colorado Pet Insurance Laws To Know

In The News

  • Renting for pet owners in the state of Colorado may be a bit lower starting in 2024 after Gov. Jared Polis signed House Bill 23-1068 into law last June. The bill was passed by both chambers in April. The new law will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2024.
  • The bill, as passed and signed into law, limits pet security deposits to $300. These deposits must be refundable, as well. It also limits any pet fee to $35 or 1.5% of the rent, whichever is higher. This fee is not refundable and is added to the monthly rent.
